Sustainable Farming

Our Philosophy

Nature transforms chaos into order. Although we have been taught to believe the opposite where order turns to chaos, the vineyard has taught us differently. When we began farming, we sensed there was little cohesiveness amongst our 20 acres; the land seemed sterile and lacking in natural beauty. To us this was chaos, an absence of symbiosis between the soil, vines and ourselves. When we began allowing the vineyard to return to a living ecosystem our restorative farming welcomed wildlife, beneficial insects and diverse groundcover plants back to the land.

Our Philosophy

Golden Rule of Winegrowing

The vineyard is sacred. It is a place of beauty. It is to be honored and respected. Nature is always enigmatic, intricate, resilient, efficient and wondrous.

A personal bond with nature is the only way to make the world a better place. Developing an agriculture that joins wildlife, volunteer vegetation, crops and humans sets this in motion.

Nature has principles that should not be violated. Holistic, organic and Biodynamic practices in the vineyard minimize the disruption of nature allowing our farm to create and maintain natural cycles. Fertility is not one thing, it is a marriage of many things. Through composting we build a living soil working within the laws of nature.

Creating systems that foster nature in form and function simply works. We encourage diverse natural processes and biological diversity through volunteer vegetation and beneficial insect habitat in the vineyard.

By farming according to our instinct, creativity and intelligence we can connect the vineyard ecosystem to all the other living systems on the planet. We acknowledge a complete understanding of Nature may be beyond Human intelligence. Nature has endless knowledge which is ever changing.

“Tranquility in the Vineyards”

Shinn Estate Farmhouse is an amazing getaway: a comfortable well-appointed house in the midst of a tranquil vineyard a short drive from New York City. A complimentary tasting of their well-regarded wines is included.

“Amazing”

Exactly what my boyfriend and I needed – a beautiful, relaxing, romantic get away. We walked around the vineyard in the morning with our coffee, what a great way to start a day. It was a nice touch having Shinn wine and a cheese plate to enjoy in the common area late afternoon. Planning another trip soon….
