Dear Friends of Shinn,

It’s another picture perfect day on Oregon Road. The sun has been up for nearly an hour and won’t set until after 8:00PM tonight. These dry and warm days of spring we’re having have helped rejuvenate our spirits after the unending winter. We haven’t had a drop of rain in May. In fact there has been no rain at all since April 23rd. The ground was pretty saturated from early spring rain and winter snowfall so we’re still a long way off from needing rain but we may see a little tonight. There is also a chance of a passing thundershower over the weekend. Expect warm and humid air otherwise. You can get up to the minute reports from our own weather station.

Nearly everyday guests visiting the tasting room ask about harvest – pondering when exactly we begin to “cut the grapes”. To us – at this time of year – harvest seems a lifetime away. There is so much vineyard work to do between now and late September that harvest does not even appear on the horizon of thought. This week Barbara’s team is disbudding – or better defined as removing excess growth – from the new vine canes which will eventually support the weight of our fruit. Just one of many back breaking jobs necessary to ensure a healthy ripe harvest.

Barbara Shinn takes a smiling moment with her crew

We finally finished bottling and labeling our 2014 Rose ($16) this week. I know everyone thinks of our Rose as dry and savory – but this year it wanted to be something else. Who am I to question nature? Fermentation became sluggish over the cold winter and eventually stopped completely – leaving it with a tiny amount of residual sugar. It actually works pretty nicely. The sweetness pushes the fruit forward and balances the acidity beautifully. Who would have thought? You’ll love it with spicy and barbecued food this summer. We’ve already delivered 25% of the production to restaurants and retailers and just this week garnered a shout out from Eric Asimov – wine critic at the New York Times.

Our Farmhouse Inn right here on the winery property is now in it’s 9th season. Come spend a relaxed afternoon enjoying cheese and wine in the comfortable living area surrounded by our extensive cookbook collection. Wake up to lush vineyard views and a delicious breakfast spread served in the historic Tuthill dining room. Visit us by reserving your stay .

The tasting room is open everyday from 10:30 AM until 5:00 PM and until 8:00 PM on Friday and Saturday. There are always 10-12 wines to choose for tasting – or enjoy a bottle or glass. Cheese plates, charcuterie, olives and nuts are available for purchase as well as signature Shinn Estate Vineyards T-shirts and copies of our cookbook “Recipes from Home” – winner of the Julia Child Cookbook Award and nominated by The James Beard Foundation for “Best American Cookbook”.

If you are unable to visit us in the tasting room and cannot find our wines near you – we ship to most places in the U.S. Our Online store has gift certificates as well as many gift packages available.

12th Annual Futures Wine Tasting and Dinner

Time is running out to ensure your future! Only one week left! Reserve your seats for 6:30 PM Saturday, January 31st or Saturday, February 7th. That is when we’ll be hosting the annual futures tastings and dinners on two back to back Saturday nights. We’ll be tasting tank and barrel samples of nearly a dozen wines. This year expect a bigger and better event than ever before. We have lots of surprises planned. Come hungry. There will be plenty of cheeses, appetizers and a hearty winter stew. Call 631-804-0367 to reserve. $95 per person – $40 of which is counted towards the purchase of wine futures that evening. Buying futures pre-bottling is a great way to get the best discounts we offer – and even a better way to support your local winegrower. Start 2015 off on the right foot by resolving to drink more Shinn Estate wines!

It’s sunny, calm and chilly today – but it will be warming up into the high 30’s – making it a great winter day to spend a little time outdoors gathering some fresh air. The weekend forecast could bring some rain or wet snow later on tomorrow – my bet is that we’ll get a dusting off snow that will get washed away by a few hours of rain – nothing significant enough to dampen weekend pleasure. Keep an eye on our weather station for up to the minute condition here on Oregon Road.

This week we bottled First Fruit Sauvignon Blanc 2014 ($22). 20% off if you purchase a case as futures until March 31st. It’s always the first to be harvested and first to get bottled – but never rushed. As always the fermentation was natural – utilizing healthy native yeasts that thrive in our vineyard soils – creating wines that showcase the beauty of the place they are grown. Order it online or come visit us in the tasting room.

12th Annual Futures Wine Tasting and Dinner

It’s time to ensure your future! Reserve your seats for 6:30 PM Saturday, January 31st or Saturday, February 7th. I woke this morning to the sound of a fierce wind cutting through the blades of the wind turbine we installed nearly five years ago.  Wind speed is on average much higher in winter so our production of energy is greater. Like most of the country we’ve had very cold temperatures this week. Its a little warmer this morning – we may get a light dusting of snow – then its back to sunny skies and frigid temperatures tomorrow. It starts to warm up slightly on Sunday.

On Tuesday Barbara and I braved the cold and gifted the vineyard with the Three Kings preparation of Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh as a way to pay forward to the elements of nature. Eileen Duffy from Edible East End wrote about the day and Randee Daddona took these beautiful photographs.

This is a quiet time of year on the farm. Vines are dormant – we’re pruning nearly everyday. The 2014 reds are beginning their journey to bottle and table by spending the next 18 months in oak barrels where they soften and settle – developing nuance and savory aroma. Half of the white wines are still fermenting. The other half will get bottled by the end of February. First up will be First Fruit Sauvignon. We tasted trial blends yesterday. Really special. Great fruit. Spicy acidity. You’ll want a case for the summer. Taste and buy it at futures dinner.

We are open everyday from 10:30 AM until 5:00 PM and until 8:00 PM on Friday and Saturday. There are always 10-12 wines to choose for tasting – or enjoy a bottle or glass. Futures Barrel Tasting – Newsletter

6: 47 AM Friday, January 2nd, 2015

Dear Friends of Shinn,

My first newsletter of 2015 comes to you on a breezy morning with a chill in the air. The sun is about to rise on another vintage as we begin our 16th growing season on Oregon Road. Happy New Year Everyone! We’ve had fairly mild conditions all week with lots of sun and no rain since Christmas Day. There is a chance we’ll see a shower or two tomorrow late afternoon – but for this time of year – we’ll take it. The snowy freezing cold alternative we were experiencing last year at this time can remain just a memory as far as I am concerned.   Get complete up to the minute Shinn Estate Vineyards reports from our own Weather Station.

Pruning and bottling. Pruning and bottling. This will be our mantra for the coming weeks. Vineyard team pruning. Winery team bottling. Pinot Blanc pruning was wrapped up a few days ago and the guys just got started in the South Merlot – known by everyone here as the “31 Lines”. Yes. There are 31 rows of Merlot vines in the 31 Lines. The vineyard crew started calling them by that name over a decade ago as a way to better communicate their location with Barbara. One day we may have to produce a wine with that name.

Its nearly time to gift  the vineyard with Gold, Frankincense, and Myhrr know as the biodynamic “Three Kings”. After grinding them in a mortar and pestle on New Years Eve we’ll add rain water and spread them on the periphery of the vineyard on the Epiphany.

Gold is a symbol of exoteric wisdom-filled power and the wisdom of the past.

Frankincense a symbol of the World Ether weaving around us as a ‘gesture’ or intention of sacrifice, and in which the Spirit is living. Also symbolizing the transience of the present.

Myrrh is a symbol of the victory of life over death. Also of the forces of the present pointing into the future.

My mother was here on New Years Eve and helped us grind and prepare these beautiful elements.

December 26th Newsletter

Dear Friends of Shinn,

It has been a quiet couple of days here on Oregon Road. Barbara and I sent our tasting room manager Jamie Altamore home midday on Christmas Eve and we have been closed  since then. Giving our staff and ourselves a short break to be home with family and loved ones for the holidays seems like the only thing to do on such a precious holiday. Most of us are back to work today through New Years Eve so come by and pay us a visit before we head into 2015.

We had another week of rain that stretched right into Christmas morning. The good news is that the sun finally made an appearance mid-morning yesterday allowing Barbara and I to take Panda on a long walk through some farm fields and abandoned vineyards. It was a beautifully warm and delightful stroll that reminded us that we live in an enchanted place. The sun will continue to shine until at least Sunday so get out and enjoy it! Get complete up to the minute Shinn Estate Vineyards reports from our own Weather Station.

Dear Friends of Shinn,

We’ve had a relatively mild December. Its been rainy from time to time – interspersed with some beautiful sunny days. A far cry from the brutally cold and snowy December we had last year. The upcoming weekend will be sunny and cold with temperatures staying in the 30’s. Come stay warm with us in the tasting room today and over the weekend. We’ve got some great holiday specials – so take a moment to relax – then stock up!   Get complete up to the minute Shinn Estate Vineyards reports from our own Weather Station.

Early this week Barbara’s vineyard crew finished pruning and removing the old wood from the trellis at the Schreiber Vineyard. Reviving this beautiful vineyard site from years of industrial farming has been a joy to watch. This will be our third year converting the farm to a holistic and sustainable winegrowing system. The Chardonnay and Riesling wines we’re producing from the fruit we harvest already resonate with the change. The earth is smiling.

After finishing at Schreiber the crew moved back to our home farm here at Shinn Estate. They have been working in the Sauvignon Blanc vines and will continue pruning white grapevines through the end of the year. We’ll get started with the reds soon after the new year. Once they finish pruning the reds they’ll head back to Schreiber and start tying next years fruiting canes to the trellis. Winegrowing is truly a year round endeavor.

Just Filled Barrels

Our team in the winery is led by Patrick Caserta who has been working with me to produce our wines for the last four vintages. The challenge of 2014 has been the management of the quantity of fruit we harvested this year. Crop yields were much higher than expected. There has been a lot of jockeying around for tank and barrel space. We’re renting a tank at a neighbors winery and have had to purchase an additional dozen barrels. The last two tanks of fermenting reds are still waiting to be pressed. We’re hoping we won’t be pressing in vintage 2015!
