Honey Bees!
When Alice Haining, one of our regular customers, heard we would be keeping bees on the farm this spring, she was kind enough to bring by a jar of 35 year old honey for us to taste. Her mother was a beekeeper in Mississippi decades ago, and Alice has held onto a giant jar of honey for all these years. She brought some last week to our Futures Event where every guest was able to taste a little bit of this treasure! It tasted just as it looks – like delicious molasses.
Most of the honey from our farm will be left for the bees to live off of, but perhaps some of you who stay in our farmhouse will be able to taste whatever leftovers there are at breakfast.

New Wine Releases
5:20 AM Friday, January 28th, 2011
Dear Friends of Shinn,
Winter has provided a very strong voice to our daily routine over the last week. The temperature reached single digits on Sunday and Monday mornng keeping us huddled indoors next to our wood burning stove. Yesterday morning we woke to yet another fresh coating of snow. This time the accumulation was in the six to eight inch range, so our vineyard crew needed to spend the morning digging us out. It looks like we may get another dusting later today. The weekend looks pretty good. There is a slight chance of some snow tomorrow, with clear skies to follow for Sunday and through the early part of next week.
Barbara and I are driving upstate later this morning to spend the weekend at a beekeeping seminar. The two of us have been talking about keeping some hives on the vineyard for a few years now, so it looks like this spring will be the one where we finally put all of the pieces together. Our friend Peter Stoutenburg from just down the road donated some hives that we’ll use to get started. Thanks Peter! In addition to the hives we’ll be keeping a dozen Rhode Island Reds for eggs starting this April. Holly and Chris Browder of Browder Chicken fame (Holly works in our tasting room) have been encouraging us for a long while so this will be the summer that our Farmhouse bed and breakfast will have fresh eggs each morning.
Later today we’ll be releasing our 2010 Coalescence ($15) in the tasting room. Anthony crafted this wine from small lots of selected grapes that coalesce to produce a tangy refreshing wine with a zing of acidity. Clean vibrant citrus notes add complexity to the fresh and juicy finish. A blend of both white and red grapes including sauvignon blanc, chardonnay, white pinot noir and merlot blanc marry to create this light and harmonious wine. Along with the release of Coalescence Anthony is releasing his new vintage of Anomaly ($19) from Anthony Nappa Wines. Anthony sources Pinot Noir from the Finger Lakes for this lovely, light and delicate white wine expression of the red Pinot Noir grape. Stop in and visit with Lauren and Sarah in the tasting room while sampling these two new and exciting releases

| 6:51 AM Friday, January 21st, 2011 Dear Friends of Shinn,We had about one inch of new snow overnight up here on Oregon Rd. It looks light and fluffy. Panda, our border collie, has not yet realized that there is new snow on the ground but when she does there will be no stopping her from spending the morning romping about the property with kid like joy. This is a photo of her in the last snowstorm. Panda The rest of the weekend is likely to be pretty chilly, but with the new snow on the ground everything looks like a winter wonderland. So stop by and warm up with some red wine. Remember that those of you that live and work locally taste free all winter. Stop by and take the locals quiz, ace it, and be entered in a drawing for a magnum of our Estate Merlot. Futures From now until the end of January we’ll be offering a special “January Getaway” package at our Farmhouse inn right here on our vineyard. Call 631-804-0367 or 631-298-0216 to take advantage of this special offer. Our vineyard crew has been pruning the grapevines since the beginning of December and have completed 14 of 20 acres. There is still a lot of tying of vines to do but it looks like we are well enough ahead that any bad weather should not be a hinderance. Barbara has been building and turning her new compost pile. Just yesterday she reported that the temperature at the center of the pile had risen to 160 degrees. The heat helps to break down the solids, leaving us with a nice fluffy humus that will get spread across the vineyard floor after this years harvest. Here is a steamy video of Barbara in the vineyard. Steamy Our winemaker Anthony is back from his Virgin Gorda beach vacation with Sara. They will be married there next year and were busy putting together some of the details. It sounds like it is going to be an unforgettable party. In the meantime he will be bottling 1500 cases of Coalescence and 500 cases of Anomaly next week. Both should be ready for purchase by the end of the week. 2010 was such a perfect vintage for these wines! We are really excited to have them ready for release. |
